I cannot say enough good things about the Kingsbridge Novels Collection by the master of historical fiction, Ken Follett. From the highly engaging narrative to historically accurate plots that twist and turn seemingly after every page, it is a spectacular piece of work. If you're like me and love history anyway, I really felt that I was being transported back in time and living every moment with the main characters. The first book in the series, 'The Evening and the Morning' is set during a time of turmoil as Viking raids terrorised the English landscape and the successive books follow the settlement of Kingsbridge as it builds its identity through the Middle Ages and Tudor period.
The books are quite hefty but don't be put off by the number of pages - once I was engaged in the plot (this doesn't take long), I was soon ploughing through each book. In fact when you have a book that you look forward to delving back into, you know you are onto a winner!
